WHAT DOES IT DO:
THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION'S NEXT GENERATION INTERNET INITIATIVE AIMS TO SHAPE THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVOLUTION OF THE INTERNET > TOWARDS AN INTERNET OF TRUST: a safer, more open and useful experience for its users. It responds to the challenge of preserving and improving the Internet and its functionalities, making it resilient and adaptable to users' needs, in compliance with European values.
ON THIS PATH TOWARDS THE INCREASINGLY PEOPLE-CENTRED INTERNET OF THE FUTURE > THE EUROPEAN UNION INTENDS TO: Incorporate its values and standards for openness, transparency, privacy, cooperation and data protection into the proposal for the Internet of the future, as expressed in the European Declaration on Digital Rights and Principles (protection of privacy, user control and choice, inclusion and decentralisation) - and as set out in the Declaration for the Future of the Internet (open, free, global, interoperable, trustworthy and secure).
NGI also contributes to the development and adoption of digital commons in the Internet technologies sector.
The development of the key technological elements for the Internet of tomorrow, towards an ecosystem of interoperable platforms, will allow users to choose from a range of open-source decentralized solutions.
Following an initial investment in 2018-2020, supporting more than 1,000 Internet researchers and innovators across hundreds of projects, the European Union has renewed funding for the Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative under Horizon Europe.
NGI provides funding and an ecosystem to innovators with the most promising ideas/projects: it is divided into specific actions that contribute to the logic and the general vision of the initiative, also offering mentoring and support to the innovators' path, starting from the development of the innovative idea.
